IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Over the last six weeks Iowa City’s City park basketball court just got an extreme makeover.
It’s the culmination of a 6 week graphics design course led by Andre Wright of Wright house of fashion.
“From that experience they were able to gain that skill and get excited about design cause I think that’s the first step, is being excited about something, and now that they have this new set of tools they can use them for various things throughout the community,” Wright said.
9 local artists contributed to the project, and TV9 spoke with several who said this is their first time ever doing something like this, and seeing the finished project is more than worth it.
“Oh my god our whole creation is coming to life, this is amazing. To see this now, I’m gonna keep saying it, to see this now is insane to me,” said Anterrion Redd.
With the mural complete, this group decided to break the court in the best way they know how, with a little three point contest.
The artists behind it hope it draws people to basketball, and pushes people to explore their creative side.
“They get to see ‘oh this is cool, there’s local people that did this, they did this here’ and it encourages them to dive into their artistic sides,” said Quincy Jones
This is the first time the Wright House of Fashion’s done a project like this, but it may not be the last.
“Absolutely, it we get the opportunity, we’ll paint every single basketball court in Iowa City if we could,” Wright said.
