The New Orleans Pelicans have trusted Zion Williamson since drafting him, but his constant battles with injuries have kept him sidelined for much of his six-year career. Recently, Williamson made headlines again after a photo surfaced that suggested he had gained significant weight.
Even so, the Pelicans remain committed to their star. During an interview with WDSU News, head coach Willie Green reaffirmed his unwavering belief in Williamson’s ability to dominate when healthy. Green made it clear that the organization is united behind Zion.
“We’re all aligned in our vision and what we believe Zion can do. We’ve seen glimpses of Zion stepping out on the floor and being one of one… if he is [consistent] , you know, sky’s the limit for him,” Green said.
So far, Williamson’s availability has been a major concern. In his career, he has only managed to play more than 70 games in one season. Last year, a bruised bone in his back restricted him to just 30 regular-season appearances.
Commentators criticized Zion’s absence. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith even labeled him a “bust” due to his lack of reliability on the court.
Joe Dumars’ Efforts To Connect With Zion Williamson
Beyond the coaching staff, influential voices in the organization are also working to strengthen ties with Williamson. On The Athletic NBA Daily podcast, journalist Will Guillory shared Joe Dumars’ role in reshaping the team’s culture while personally building a bond with Zion. Guillory.
“Joe Dumars has made his presence felt. Not just with the moves on the roster. Culturally, he’s already doing some things behind the scenes. At the forefront is. Wanting to kind of develop a relationship with Zion Williamson. Hearing stories about him bringing Zion and them watching playoff games. Spending time together with Troy Weaver. He’s really wanted to come in and make an impact on this team,” Guillory said.
The Pelicans continue to trust in Williamson’s rare talent. If Zion can find consistency in his health, New Orleans still envisions him as the centerpiece of their championship aspirations.
