Multiple criminal charges against former NBA guard and Sixth Man of the Year, Ben Gordon, were dismissed on Monday, following his 2023 arrest in a Connecticut juice shop where authorities reported erratic behaviour.

The weapons and threatening charges will now be removed from his record after Gordon successfully completed a probation program approved by a state judge.

Commitment to Mental Health

Gordon’s lawyer, Darnell Crosland, praised the former player’s dedication to addressing his mental health challenges.

“Mental health is really important, and the court saw his commitment to doing the right thing in life, and that is why they sealed his record and dismissed all of his charges,” Crosland said.

He also acknowledged Gordon’s influence on his own life, crediting him with teaching the balance required to manage daily stresses.

The Arrest Incident

Gordon, who helped lead the University of Connecticut to the 2004 NCAA national championship, was arrested on his 40th birthday at a Stamford juice shop, just hours after UConn won its fifth NCAA men’s basketball title.

Police reported several 911 calls about aggressive and bizarre behaviour. When officers arrived, Gordon allegedly continued to act erratically, prompting police to handcuff him outside the store.

Open About Bipolar Disorder and Depression

The former player has previously spoken about his struggles with bipolar disorder and depression, which he said have contributed to multiple past arrests. Crosland noted that Gordon’s ongoing commitment to his mental well-being played a key role in the court’s decision to dismiss the charges.

NBA Career Highlights

Selected third overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, Gordon played 11 seasons in the league. He won the NBA Sixth Man Award as a rookie (the only rookie to ever do so) and went on to play for Detroit, Charlotte, and Orlando after five seasons in Chicago.

Gordon remains a celebrated figure at UConn for his role in the 2004 national championship.
