NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets had some business to take care off coming into the 2025 NBA offseason as they had to figure out how they were going to re-sign guard Cam Thomas. After months of negotiations, Thomas accepted his $6 million qualifying offer (QO) to return to Brooklyn and general manager Sean Marks gave his take on what the relationship is like with Thomas.

“Just to second what Jordi said, he’s (Thomas) approached this in a very mature manner. It’s part of the business; it’s maybe the ugly part of the business when you kind of find a common ground,” Marks said during Tuesday’s Media Day when asked about the relationship between Thomas and the organization. On Sep. 4, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Thomas accepted his QO, noting that Thomas chose his QO over other offers from the Nets.

“But at the same time, how he’s developed and the hours that he’s put in the gym not only here but on his own speaks volumes,” Marks continued. “So, you know, he’s a Net. He knows that. He’s been very upfront and very mature, as I said before. We’ve had very pleasant conversations throughout the summer about the process. You know, I think we both sides understand what’s at stake. But I also don’t want to jump to conclusions just because a common ground couldn’t be met this summer doesn’t mean he’s not a Net in the future or throughout the season.”

Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his career after averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. While Thomas generated that production for the Nets during the 2024-25 season, he did it in just 25 games as he dealt with multiple left hamstring injuries over the course of the campaign.

Heading into the offseason, it seemed that Thomas was destined for a contract ranging somewhere between $20 million per season and $30 million per season given his production last season. However, despite the fact that Thomas did not get the outcome that he wanted, Marks maintained that the former LSU Tiger has been handling the situation with maturity.
