After months of failed negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga, the Golden State Warriors are facing a tough choice. They can either let their former lottery pick sign his qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, or they can begin exploring his sign-and-trade market in an attempt to recoup some valuable assets.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Warriors and Sacramento Kings have renewed their discussions over a potential sign-and-trade. The Kings have reportedly registered their interest in Kuminga throughout the summer; however, until now, the Warriors haven’t been open to the notion of sending him to their divisional rivals.
“While the two teams went more than a month without discussing the matter during the later part of the summer, team sources said the talks between the two sides were renewed earlier this week,” Amick reported. “And while no significant progress was made, it’s notable that the Kings — who have offered veteran guard Malik Monk and a lottery-protected 2030 first-round pick for the chance to give Kuminga a three-year, $63 million deal — aren’t giving up on bringing him to Sacramento this season.”
Kuminga’s contractual standoff has reportedly been due to his desire to have a player option in the final year of his contract. However, Golden State appears to be standing firm on the current three-year deal on the table, which has a team option attached for the final year.

With training camp set to begin on Sept. 29, and the Warriors still boasting just nine players under contract, the front office will undoubtedly be keen to find a resolution. Whether that is a sign-and-trade will remain to be seen, but at least the front office is exploring all options at its disposal.
