Former Cincinnati Bearcats star Jarron Cumberland has received an NBA training camp invitation from the Los Angeles Lakers. The Cincinnati Bearcats basketball program has hired longtime NBA staffer Kelly Peters as a special assistant to the head coach.

One of the top scorers in Cincinnati Bearcats basketball history has received an invite to NBA training camp by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jarron Cumberland, now 28, averaged 19.6 points per game in the past NBA G-League season for the Delaware Blue Coats, an affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers. He shot 47.3% from the field, 46.1% from three-point range and 81.8% from the free throw line.

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Cumberland finished seventh in UC history in points with 1,782 and assists with 415. Undrafted in the NBA in 2020, he’s played primarily in the G-League, with one 10-day contract with Portland in late 2021.

Should Cumberland not stick, he would likely wind up with the Lakers’ G-League team, the South Bay Lakers, putting him close to his former college coach, Mick Cronin.

Cumberland’s best season at UC was his junior year, when he averaged 18.8 points per game and led the Bearcats to the AAC tournament title over Houston and was named the outstanding player of the tourney in Memphis. UC won 31 games that season, which was their last appearance in an NCAA tournament.

Wes Miller adds another staffer with NBA ties to Cincinnati Bearcats

The Cincinnati Bearcats added longtime NBA staffer Kelly Peters as special assistant to head coach Wes Miller, the program announced Friday, Sept. 26. Peters possesses more than a decade of experience in the professional ranks with the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers organizations.

“Kelly brings a wealth of experience and perspective from almost a decade in the NBA with multiple organizations,” Miller said. “We’re glad to have him join the staff as we continue our preparation for the season.”

Peters most recently spent time as an assistant coach with USA Basketball’s FIBA Americas team and served as an advance scout with the 76ers from 2020-23 after spending a year with the team as a coaching associate and another year as an assistant coach with the team’s G-League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. Before that, Peters was an assistant coach for a season with the Santa Cruz Warriors after spending three years as an advance scout with the Golden State Warriors.

“I’m really excited to hit the ground running and have the opportunity to work with Coach Miller, this staff and this team,” Peters said. “I look to bring NBA-level championship experience to a program with this type of history, commitment and community to help us compete in the Big 12 and nationally.”

Peters, who has four years of previous experience working for Turner and CBS helping broadcasters prepare for the NCAA Tournament, joins general manager Corey Evans, who was hired from the Oklahoma City Thunder in late March.
