DETROIT. (WILX) – The Detroit Pistons fell to the New York Knicks, 116-113, in Game 6, allowing New York to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and ending Detroit’s season.
The Pistons were led by Cade Cunningham with 23 points and eight assists. Malik Beasley supplied 20 points, and Jalen Duren finished with 21.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 40 points and also had seven assists. Mikal Bridges had 25 points for New York, and Karl-Anthony Towns was limited to just 10 points and fouled out with a few minutes left in the fourth.
Detroit got off to a slow start on both ends of the floor, and New York led 37-23 at the end of the first quarter. Brunson scored 15 points and had 4 assists in the first.
The Pistons stormed back in the second quarter to tie the game at 49-49 on a 19-5 run that included four three-pointers from Malik Beasley. With a minute remaining in the quarter, a Cade Cunningham floater gave Detroit its first lead at 58-57. Malik Beasley hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send Detroit to halftime up 61-59. Beasley had 18 points in the first half, all coming on threes.
The Knicks took the momentum back in the third quarter, outscoring Detroit 37-24 and taking a 96-85 lead into the fourth quarter.
Detroit returned the favor in the fourth quarter, where an Ausar Thompson layup with 6:06 remaining in the fourth quarter capped an 11-0 Pistons run and tied the game at 103-103. Detroit led 112-111 heading into the final minute of the game. New York tied it at 113-113 on a tip-in with 35 seconds left. Detroit missed a chance at a go-ahead layup, then Jalen Brunson nailed a go-ahead three-pointer to put the Knicks up 116-113 with 4.3 seconds left. The Pistons turned the ball over on their last possession, and New York won 116-113.
New York advances to face the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
