Los Angeles Lakers fans have some hope this season that rookie forward Adou Thiero can become a contributor. He was taken in the second round of the NBA draft with the No. 36 pick by the Brooklyn Nets, and the Lakers maneuvered up to obtain his rights on draft day.

Thiero is a 6-foot-8, 220-pound wing who has plenty of athleticism and the ability to slash to the hoop. Unfortunately, a knee injury he suffered several months ago prevented him from participating in summer league in July.

He said at media day on Monday that he’s dealing with swelling in his injured knee and hasn’t yet been cleared to take part in training camp. But according to one source, the University of Arkansas product is close to getting the green light to play.

Thiero averaged 15.1 points on 54.5% shooting from the field, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals last season for the Razorbacks. Given the number of viable forwards that L.A. has, it will be difficult for him to earn any meaningful playing time anytime soon, but perhaps in time, he could carve out a spot in coach JJ Redick’s rotation.
