Former Syracuse star Lawrence Moten, who went on to play in the NBA, has died, according to Syracuse.com. He was 53 years old.

Moten was found dead in his home in Washington, D.C., the website reports. His daughter confirmed the news to Syracuse.com.

The all-time leading scorer in Syracuse history, Lawrence Moten averaged 19.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game across his four-year college basketball career.

He finished his college career with 2,334 points, which ranks in the top-10 in Big East history.

Lawrence Moten earned second-team All-American honors in 1995, his final season of college basketball, before being drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft.

He spent three seasons in the NBA — two with Vancouver and one with the Washington Wizards — before returning to Syracuse to work with youth groups within the Syracuse city school district, according to Syracuse.com.

A native of Washington, D.C., Moten returned to D.C. this past June, the website reports, and was working as the general manager for the boys and girls basketball teams at Digital Pioneers Academy.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel took to X to remember Moten.

“This is completely heartbreaking,” he said. “Prayers with Lawrence Moten’s family. An all-time great player in Syracuse and Big East history.”
