When LeBron James joined the professional ranks in 2003, he made his mark in the NBA quickly. Picked first overall by his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, he hit the ground running. He proved to everyone he was the real deal with his elite court vision, awe-inspiring athleticism and knack for scoring buckets.
However, what truly helped LeBron stand out was his physique. While most players take a while to build their bodies and adapt to the rigors of an 82-game schedule, LeBron was built like a tank from day one. Standing at 6’9″ and weighing around 250 pounds, he already had all the physical tools to impact the big league from the get-go.

Speaking to skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, LeBron surmised that today’s NBA is a far cry from the one he joined more than two decades ago, claiming that if he joined the league in this era, his athleticism would no longer stand out; it would be just another trait among many possessed by the league’s top players.
A slower-paced game
Bron joined the NBA during the 2003-04 season. And the champion team that season — the Detroit Pistons — perfectly exemplified the league’s tempo and gameplay: slow, physical and gritty. Despite his young age and inexperience, King James said his athleticism immediately gave him an edge over his opponents.

“I think you said it in the sense of just how creative the game is now compared to when I first came in two decades ago,” he said on “The Main Thing.”
“Back then, it was a slower-paced game. You had some athletic guys on the floor, but not the majority,” LeBron continued.
The league still had athletic freaks like Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter. However, those players were exceptions, not the rule. Today’s NBA, though, boasts high-flyers and speedsters on every team.

“Now, out of 10 players on the court, you’ve got six, seven, sometimes eight who can run fast, jump high, move laterally, move backwards and forwards,” LeBron deduced.
An era dominated by athletic specimens
James makes a solid point. Today’s NBA is populated by players who possess incredible physical abilities. Gone are the days of slow, plodding big men dominating the game. Now, it’s all about speed, agility, and explosive athleticism routinely displayed by the likes of Anthony Edwards, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Zion Williamson and Amen Thompson.

This evolution has made for a more exciting and entertaining game, which is often played above the rim.
“When I first came in, there were only a select few who could do that. You could really stand out if you were that guy,” LeBron conveyed. “You can still stand out today, but I’m just saying, there are way more of those guys now.”
Even at age 40, LBJ is no slouch when it comes to athleticism. Although it’s clear he is no longer as explosive as he once was when he made his NBA debut, he can still give the young guns a run for their money. However, as King James alluded to, it’s a different game now; it features players who can elevate and detonate at the rim in unheard-of ways.
