Cap space has been the Brooklyn Nets‘ biggest weapon in recent months. Sean Marks has shown considerable restraint in the market, making calculated additions to the roster, rather than pursuing flashier names who don’t necessarily fit with the rotation or vision for the squad. Nevertheless, Michael Porter Jr., Terance Mann, Haywood Highsmith and Kobe Bufkin have all walked through the door this summer.

Despite those four additions, Brooklyn still has approximately $13 million in cap space. It’s for that reason that ESPN’s Bobby Marks believes the Nets could still swing another trade before the new season gets underway. Of course, the Nets would need to pinpoint someone they believe can improve the current roster, either now or in the coming years.

“Brooklyn could fall under the minimum salary floor by waiving Jalen Wilson, Tyrese Martin and Drew Timme,” Marks wrote. “The Nets already have 15 players on guaranteed contracts, and the three aforementioned players have a combined $6.2 million in non-guaranteed salary. If the three are waived before Oct. 20, Brooklyn would need to trade for a player earning more than $4 million.”

The Nets have been navigating a rebuild over the past few years. The addition of Porter Jr. will undoubtedly help speed up their return to relevance in the Eastern Conference. However, that doesn’t mean additional reinforcements wouldn’t be welcomed by the fanbase and coaching staff.

Even if the Nets choose to stand pat and enter the season with the current roster, they will still be a player in the trade market, assuming someone becomes available between now and the Feb. 5 trade deadline. It’s for that reason that Brooklyn will remain an interesting franchise to keep an eye on, especially if they can start putting together a solid product on the court.
