CANYON, Texas (KFDA) — West Texas A&M University Athletics announced today that head men’s basketball coach Tom Brown has signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge of the team until the summer of 2028.
Last season, Brown and the Buffs finished 19-12, with their season coming to a close against Colorado School of Mines in the NCAA South Central Regional round.
They are now just three weeks away from getting the 2025-26 campaign underway, traveling to St. Joseph, Missouri, to take on Missouri Western and Pittsburg State in the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic on Oct. 31.
Strong endorsement from athletics leadership
In the release, West Texas A&M Vice President of Athletics Doug Lipinski said, “This contract is a commitment to Tom Brown and the Buffs basketball program. Tom has won a lot of games for WT. His goal is to win a national championship for Buff Nation.”
“We look forward to the future of West Texas A&M basketball,” Lipinski said.
Impressive track record since 2014
Since his arrival to WT in 2014, Brown has compiled an impressive overall record of 285 wins and just 75 losses, a 79.2% winning percentage. Within the Lone Star Conference, he holds a 155-43 record.
Coach Brown and the Buffs have made the NCAA Tournament for nine straight years, with trips to the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four, and the program’s first-ever national championship game appearance in 2021.
The contract extension signals the university’s confidence in Brown’s leadership as the program continues to build on its championship aspirations.
