LeBron James had NBA fans on the edge of their seats on Monday night. Dropping a teaser for what he called the ‘Second Decision’, he had fans speculating about a retirement announcement. However, when the big reveal happened on Tuesday, it simply turned out to be an advertisement for Hennessey.
Meanwhile, James has received criticism for this stunt on social media. Ticket prices for Los Angeles Lakers games went up after the King’s post, which makes it easier to understand the frustration some fans felt at this. But head coach JJ Redick has no sympathy for them, suggesting that everyone should have known it was an ad.

“You guys are idiots,” Redick told the media when asked about the frenzy around James’ announcement. “We all knew it was an ad, right? Nobody was freaking out.”
While it’s easy for Redick to say this, he might be underestimating how much attention fans pay to anything James does. LeBron released a similar teaser last offseason, and fans are unlikely to keep falling for the gimmick. It’s hard to dispute that a retirement would be unlikely, though, so perhaps Redick does have a point.

LeBron is entering his 23rd NBA season, an incredible achievement. No other player has managed to play that many years at the highest level. Moreover, he continues to perform like an All-Star and is one of the primary reasons the Lakers view themselves as contenders. Hopefully, the actual retirement isn’t coming any time soon.
