The Breckenridge Buckaroos basketball team continued to prepare for the upcoming regular season as they competed in the third week of the Graham fall basketball league.Â
The new week of the league took place Monday, Oct. 7 and the Bucks dropped both games against the Graham Steers and the Jacksboro Tigers.Â
The first game against Graham started competitively as the Bucks landed the first basket of the game on a layup after the Steers won the opening tip. After allowing a couple shots to put Graham up 4-2, Conor Salazar helped score on two straight baskets for the Bucks. The first he laid one in and the second he found an open Kevin Araujo for a layup.Â
With Graham putting in work on the boards, the Steers came back to put up points in the paint and took an 11-6 lead. Bry Armstrong later knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one at 13-12.Â
The Bucks stayed in the game but Graham started to pull away a bit as the Breckenridge deficit was 28-17 after the first half. The Bucks struggled to land shots in the second half and allowed several threes as the deficit got out to 41-17.Â
Andrew White broke the scoreless streak with a layup, but the Graham offensive attack deemed too much to handle as the Bucks ultimately fell 54-21.Â
The second game against Jacksboro remained much more highly-contested throughout, as the Bucks ultimately lost 53-41. Kadenn Shook hit a three-pointer to bring the Bucks to within one at 9-8.Â
They then took the lead when Salazar knocked down a fast break layup on a Jacksboro turnover. The Tigers came back to take a 14-12 lead and that lead would turn to 22-16.Â
Araujo recorded a layup on a fastbreak off a steal to get within 22-18.Â
A midrange jumper and a breakaway layup off a steal by Armstrong tied the score at 22 to end the first half.
Jacksboro started the second half with an 11-point run to snag a 33-22 lead before Shook hit a corner three for the Bucks’ first points of the second half. Artmund Malab hit a layup under the basket on the assist from Salazar before the latter hit a three to cut the deficit to 33-30.Â
Another three from Armstrong cut the Jacksboro lead to 35-33 after the Breckenridge defense allowed a basket.Â
Jacksboro then went on a 16-point run to extend their lead back out to 51-33 and the Bucks would go on to lose, 53-41. Armstrong ended the game with another three-pointer.Â
