Well, this would be something. LeBron James, rocking the orange and blue, running the floor at Madison Square Garden. Wild, right? Yet that’s exactly what some are imagining after new trade talk put the Los Angeles Lakers star in New York Knicks colors.
The idea gained traction after reports on October 7 claimed that Giannis Antetokounmpo would only consider a trade to the Knicks. That set the NBA world on fire. But then came an even juicier thought: what if the Knicks aimed for LeBron instead of Giannis? After all, as one insider joked, “If you can’t get the Greek Freak, maybe get the King.”
It’s not impossible either. LeBron has always shown love for New York. After shutting down retirement rumors and saying he’s not done with basketball, many fans think he still has more to prove, maybe even with the Knicks under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

Bill Simmons added more hype to the rumors during his October 8 podcast. “If you’re LeBron, the two places you’d go are probably Cleveland or the Knicks,” he said. “You’d come home to Cleveland and finish your career, or you’d go to the Knicks, where you should have probably gone in 2010.”
But there’s a catch or several. Matching LeBron’s $52.6 million salary would force the Knicks to move a key player like OG Anunoby. That’s where things get tricky. Ariel Helwani didn’t mince words when asked about that possibility. “If they give up a guy like Anunoby for him, even one-for-one would be insane. That makes no sense,” he said.
The Knicks have built their roster around youth and long-term competitiveness. LeBron, at 40 next season, doesn’t fit that window. His trade value has also dipped, considering his age and contract. Still, he remains elite and continues to perform at a level few can touch.
As Simmons put it bluntly, “LeBron’s stuck with the Lakers and he’s going to eventually realize that.”Even though LeBron’s recent “Second Decision” was just an ad campaign, fans can’t help but wonder, could another big move be coming?
Because if the King ever decides to wear blue and orange, New York City won’t sleep for a week.
