WNBA legend Swin Cash is reportedly saying goodbye to the New Orleans Pelicans after a five-year stint with the team. Last June, she was elevated to Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations, becoming one of the highest-ranking women in NBA history.
Following NBA insider Michael Scotto’s scoop on her departure this Thursday, Cash took to Instagram to express her gratitude towards New Orleans, marking six years with Marvin Sapp’s “Thank You for It All.”
Her post included a montage of cherished moments with the squad, featuring snapshots with Trey Murphy III and her kids, as well as a group picture with current and former players like Zion Williamson and Lonzo Ball.

Her heartfelt message read: “Dear New Orleans, thank You for it all. Six years of memories, growth, highs and lows, the birth of our son, and all while remaining unapologetically me. Thank you for the love, and the critics pulling up on me in carpool or the grocery store about y’all’s team. I appreciate it all because it’s part of the journey… stay tuned. To my guys IYKYK.”
New Orleans shooting guard Dejounte Murray felt the message loud and clear, responding, “You the realest,” in the comments section of the video. The Naismith Hall of Famer got kudos from Pelicans guard CJ McCollum too, who replied with a goat and heart emoji to the announcement.
Fans were all praise for Cash’s tenure, dubbing her “A true trailblazer,” and “the best of the best” in her field. Following the post, Cash echoed an Instagram story from Pelicans VP of Production Shaneika Dabney-Henderson, hinting at her exit. Cash wrote, “At some point I will have the full words but just know I appreciate you deeply sis.”

The buzz about Cash’s potential departure, stoked by NBA connoisseurs, comes in the wake of a lacklustre 21-61 season and the continuing saga with star player Williamson. Cash didn’t hold back on social media when Charles Barkley mocked Williamson’s weight, questioning why a popular TV show would broadcast doctored images of a 21 year old to garner mean-spirited clicks. “Whew, the clown behavior really is shocking. Especially from adults,” she remarked.
After New Orleans bowed out early in the 2024 playoffs, they nosedived to become one of the weakest teams in the NBA by 2025. Despite turmoil among fans and increasing doubt over head coach Willie Green, new Executive VP Joe Dumars backed him up this spring – touting him as “a great man” with commendable vision.
Cash’s role was more than just mentorship and management. As the Senior VP of Basketball Operations for an NBA team, she was involved in overseeing roster construction, coaching evaluations, and liaising with both General Manager Bryson Graham and the scouting staff. It remains to be seen what Cash’s next professional move will be and whether it will involve the NBA.
