PHOENIX — Mercury associate head coach Kristi Toliver’s name has come up in a lot of WNBA circles as an interesting candidate for any of the league’s five head coaching vacancies. She’s even in the mix to potentially be Sandy Brondello’s successor with the Liberty.

The Mercury granted the Liberty permission to speak with Toliver, according to multiple league sources. A formal interview is expected to take place after the WNBA season, sources said, which came to an end when the Aces completed their sweep of Phoenix on Friday night in the WNBA Finals.

Toliver also previously interviewed to be Toronto’s inaugural head coach, sources said. Other candidates for that job include Brondello and Pacers assistant Jenny Boucek, according to sources.

Toliver, 38, is only two years removed from playing in the WNBA, but she’s eager to take the next step in her career.
