The San Antonio Spurs will enter the 2025-26 NBA season looking to end their six-year playoff drought.

Of course, the Spurs are led by their core of Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, along with new head coach Mitch Johnson who replaced Gregg Popovich this offseason after filling in for him last season.

San Antonio also made some key additions to their roster this offseason as they selected Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in the first round of the 2025 draft, signed Luke Kornet in free agency and acquired Kelly Olynyk in a trade with the Washington Wizards.

By making these moves, the Spurs will try to return to form this season as they try to make a push for the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference.

Spurs Could Target Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo This Season

While the Spurs try to clinch a playoff spot this season, they could also look to make moves ahead of the deadline to upgrade their roster, which could see them try and land another star player.

San Antonio was linked to many players this offseason, including Trey Murphy III and Lauri Markkanen, but the main player they continue to be linked to is Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Giannis’ future in Milwaukee is uncertain and if the Bucks decide to move him this season, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel believes that the Spurs and the Atlanta Hawks have the easiest path to acquiring him due to their number of tradeable assets.

Mock Trade Lands Spurs Giannis for 4-Player Package

In a potential trade, the Spurs could send Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes and multiple first-round picks to the Bucks in exchange for Giannis and Gary Trent Jr.

While trading away four key pieces to their roster in this deal would be a tough decision for the Spurs to make, swapping them for one of the best players in the league in Giannis could make them title contenders this season.

Of course, Giannis is an elite scorer and defender who could fit well inside next to Wembanyama, likely creating one of the best defensive frontcourts in the NBA and also bringing a new dominant frontcourt duo to San Antonio, reminiscent of the days of Tim Duncan and David Robinson.

Last season, the 30-year-old star forward averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 60.1% from the field.

The pairing of Giannis and Wembanyama together would also allow the Spurs to still space the floor with two dominant big men due to Wembanyama’s outside shooting abilities and it could also cause other players to get open due to defenses trying to stop the duo inside.

By making this trade, the Spurs could become a championship contender as soon as this season with a new core of Giannis, Wembanyama, Fox, Castle and Harper, though the Bucks may require San Antonio to include either Castle or Harper in a potential trade.

If that ends up being the case, the Spurs may hold off on this deal and look elsewhere to upgrade their roster as they try to end their playoff drought this season.
