The Nets announce that they have waived F Drew Timme and G Dariq Whitehead.

Whitehead was the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, but he has never found his way into the rotation mostly due to injuries.

The Brooklyn Nets came into the 2025-26 NBA preseason knowing that they would have to make some tough decisions before the season opener. Brooklyn entered training camp with a full roster of 21 players, meaning that at least three of those players would not longer be on the team. The Nets are starting to trim the roster down.

The Nets announced on Monday that they waived guard Dariq Whitehead and forward Drew Timme following Sunday’s 111-109 preseason win over the Phoenix Suns in Macao, China. Whitehead, the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, played just six minutes in Sunday’s win over the Suns, indicating that he was on the fringes of the roster.

Whitehead, 21, could still come back to Brooklyn either on a Two-Way contract or as part of the G League roster, but it seems like the team has made its decision on his potential. At one point in his career, Whitehead was considered one of the best players in his high school class prior to attending Duke University where he was unable to reclaim he had in high school due to a nagging foot injury.

Whitehead’s time in the NBA as not been much to talk about through his first two seasons as he has played in just 22 games and is only averaging 5.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Whitehead came into this campaign hoping to finally put something on film given that he was able to spend the summer working on his game as opposed to rehabbing, but the Nets have different plans for the back end of their roster.

Timme, 25, came to Brooklyn last season after excelling in the G League to the point that he won G League Player of the Week for an outstanding few games that put up on the NBA call-up map. Timme played well during his time with the Nets last season as he played in nine games, averaging 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.1% from the field. Brooklyn has 19 players on the roster as of this writing.
