Rookie Will Riley helped the Washington Wizards to a victory over the New York Knicks on Monday, leading the second unit in scoring in their second preseason game.
Riley produced 17 points, two rebounds and two assists in the 120-103 win at Madison Square Garden. He finished by shooting 7-of-11 from the field, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range, and was a plus-17 in 26 minutes on the court.
The 21st pick scored nine points alone in the third quarter, showcasing his vision and ability in the open court. He also earned several easy looks at the rim with his movement and cutting behind the defense, which stood out to coach Brian Keefe.
He has got a unique knack to crash the boards. He is pretty good at that, but then just his movement, cutting and understanding space offensively. You can start seeing what he can do with some of the decision-making he is capable of. He is one of those handlers that can make plays. He has got a good motor to him. It has been impressive so far.
Riley is averaging 10.5 points, two rebounds and two assists on 50% shooting from the field in two appearances with the Wizards. He seemingly bounced back following a four-point debut on Sunday in a loss to the Toronto Raptors.
The 19-year-old Canadian has been among the standouts of training camp, thanks to his energy and intensity on the court. In addition to the traits highlighted by Keefe, Riley has also displayed his ability as a two-way player who can guard multiple positions.
Riley is relishing the chance to carve out a role for himself at the wing position this preseason. With one game left on Thursday, the former Illinois forward will look to build on his latest appearance and build positive momentum heading into the regular season.
