New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen is expected to be available to play in their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies after recovering from a wrist injury.

Queen was limited throughout the preseason after undergoing surgery on July 18 to address a torn ligament in his left wrist. He was eventually cleared to resume complete basketball activities on Saturday and has been a full participant in practice.

The 13th pick wasn’t listed by the team on its injury report for Wednesday, clearing the way for him to debut in Memphis. Pelicans coach Willie Green said after practice on Tuesday that it appeared as though Queen would suit up against the Grizzlies.

Queen logged three appearances with the Pelicans in summer league, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block. He registered a double-double in each appearance, including a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against Portland on July 15.

The 20-year-old was thrilled to return to practice over the weekend and join the team on the court. He believed there were, understandably, some mistakes made, but thought he should be completely up to speed after 2-3 more days of practice and other team drills.

Queen should help provide some frontcourt depth for the team, with Kevon Looney sidelined with a knee injury. The team will likely be cautious with his return, but the organization will soon have one of its first-round picks back on the floor.
