In shocking news, more than 30 people have been arrested due to alleged involvement in illegal sports betting and/or rigged poker games, and among them is Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. Rozier was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Orlando, Fla. for his alleged involvement in illegal sports betting.

Interestingly, a report from Five Reasons Sports’ Ethan J. Skolnick indicates that Rozier had no inkling that he would be arrested on Thursday morning. After all, Skolnick noted that the guard was in a “great mood” in Miami’s locker room on Wednesday night. The Heat played the Orlando Magic and lost by four points.

“Rozier was in a great mood when he left the locker room last night,” Skolnick wrote via Discord. “So no, I don’t think he had any idea.”

For a long time, suspicion around Rozier has been linked to a regular-season contest between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans back in 2023. After a suspiciously large number of bets flowed in taking the unders on Rozier’s props, the guard left the game after just 10 minutes of action, citing a foot injury.

The former Hornet allegedly informed folks close to him that he planned on exiting the game early with an injury. Associates allegedly bet an excess of $200,000 on Rozier’s unders and then sent money to his residence.

“On March 23, 2023, Rozier, while playing for the Hornets, let others close to him know that he planned to leave early with injury,” The Athletic’s Ralph D. Russo wrote. “Associates bet more than $200,000 on Rozier’s unders and winnings were delivered to Rozier’s home, the indictment alleges.”

What makes Rozier’s arrest somewhat surprising is that he was cleared by the NBA not all that long ago.

Of course, his Heat tenure is now in limbo following his arrest. However, he wasn’t projected to have a big role with Miami this season even before he got arrested.

Rozier was healthy enough to suit up in Miami’s season opener on Wednesday, yet he didn’t play due to a coach’s decision. It’s worth noting that the Heat aren’t exactly loaded with depth at the guard spots right now with star Tyler Herro on the shelf (and rookie Kasparas Jakucionis missing the opener), yet Rozier still didn’t see the floor.

It’s unfortunate that Miami’s decision to trade for Rozier partway through the 2023-24 regular season has aged so poorly. The Heat traded guard Kyle Lowry along with a 2027 first-round pick for Rozier, who may very well have already played his final game with the franchise.
