The Brooklyn Nets put on a show for their fans at Barclays Center on Friday in a narrow 131-124 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers that had the crowd cheering. Brooklyn did not get their desired result after coming back from as many as 25 points, but they came away from the game with the same injuries, including a player who’s worse for wear afterwards.
The Nets announced on Saturday that guard Cam Thomas is available for Sunday’s game at the San Antonio Spurs due to a nasal fracture that surprisingly isn’t keeping him out of the lineup. Thomas suffered his nasal injury during Friday’s loss to the Cavaliers and there was a point where the YES Network broadcast showed Thomas with his nose filled with tissue to stop the bleeding.
Aside from that, Brooklyn’s injury report remains the same as forwards Drake Powell, Danny Wolf, and Haywood Highsmith are out for Sunday’s game at San Antonio due to their respective injuries. Powell is dealing with a right ankle sprain, Wolf is recovering from a left ankle sprain, and Highsmith is still rehabbing after offseason knee surgery prior to coming to the Nets via trade.
At this point, head coach Jordi Fernandez has made it clear what his rotation will be as he essentially has gone nine-deep with players like forward Ziaire Williams and rookie guard Egor Demin making solid contributions off the bench. With Powell, Wolf, and Highsmith out of the lineup, look for players like forward Noah Clowney and center Day’Ron Sharpe to see more time, especially as the Nets try to match up with forward Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs.
San Antonio is off to a 2-0 start this season and it’s primarily because of Wembanyama averaging 34.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, and 6.0 blocks per game in the early going. Brooklyn starting center Nic Claxton and Sharpe will have their hands full with Wembanyama, but Claxton has had some solid games against Wembanyama in the past so the hope is that he can recreate those moments.
