Janti Miller dropped a career-high 24 points to power San Beda University past San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 62–50, in the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
This also marked Miller’s third straight 20-point performance of the season, after scoring 20 points apiece against Mapua University and Arellano University.
The Red Lions opened the game strong, taking a 28–14 lead in the first quarter before notching their biggest advantage, 45–22, just before halftime. Ian Cuajao drilled a triple late in the second quarter to help San Sebastian trim the deficit.
The Golden Stags tried to rally in the third frame, outscoring San Beda 13–7 while forcing the Red Lions to commit nine turnovers.
“It’s a good wake-up call for our offense. It’s really hard to score if you commit nine turnovers in a quarter,” San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta told GMA Integrated News, although he emphasized that they still limited San Sebastian to just 13 points in that frame.
San Sebastian opened the final quarter with a 8–2 run to pull within eight, 54–46, but San Beda responded with its own 8–2 run to widen the margin past the halfway mark of the period.
The Mendiola-based squad eventually held off the Golden Stags to secure the victory.
While Miller registered a career-high performance, he was quick to credit San Beda’s deep roster of offensive threats.
“No, it’s not about me,” he said, highlighting teammates such as Jomel Puno, who tallied 17 rebounds along with 10 points, and Nygel Gonzales, who added six points.
Jhuniel Dela Rama also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Cuajao finished with 10 markers.
The victory solidified San Beda’s hold on the top spot in Group B with a 6–1 win-loss record, while San Sebastian dropped to 1–7.
