The Denver Nuggets made an early statement in their second game of the 2025-26 NBA season, defeating the Phoenix Suns 133-111 at Ball Arena. Jamal Murray led all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds and five assists, while the Nuggets’ supporting cast provided balanced contributions. Still, it was Nikola Jokic who dictated the game’s tempo, controlling the glass and orchestrating the offense with his usual precision.
Despite taking only eight shots on the night, Jokic’s impact was felt throughout. By the final buzzer, his performance prompted a major announcement from the NBA — one that added another historic milestone to his already stacked resume.

Following the game, the NBA confirmed Jokic’s latest feat on social media, announcing he became just the fifth player in league history to open a season with back-to-back triple-doubles. He joins Russell Westbrook, Magic Johnson, Jerry Lucas and Oscar Robertson on that exclusive list.
“Nikola Jokić becomes the 5th player in NBA history to open up a season with back-to-back triple-doubles! Joining… Russell Westbrook (2020-21), Magic Johnson (1981-82, 1982-83), Jerry Lucas (1972-73), Oscar Robertson (1961-62),” the NBA wrote on X.

Jokic finished the night with 14 points, 14 rebounds and 15 assists on 5-of-8 shooting. The Serbian finished the first half with four points, seven rebounds and 11 assists. He didn’t make his first field goal until late in the second quarter, eventually securing his triple-double with a layup late in the third.
Jokic’s calm command of Denver’s offense allowed his teammates to thrive while he quietly stacked numbers across the board. His early-season form has been a reminder of why the Nuggets remain a threat in the Western Conference.

Jokic had already recorded a 21-point, 13-rebound and 10-assist triple-double in the season opener against the Golden State Warriors, continuing a streak of all-around dominance that now includes 166 career regular-season triple-doubles, third-most in NBA history behind Westbrook and Robertson.
Already a three-time MVP, Jokic once again finds himself among the early favorites to capture the award, while the Nuggets are viewed as one of the top contenders. Denver will look to keep momentum going when it faces the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road Monday night. Tip is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
