Rookie Collin Murray-Boyles registered his first double-digit scoring performance on Monday, helping lead the Toronto Raptors in a loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Murray-Boyles produced 19 points, three rebounds, three steals, one assist and one blocked shot in the 121-103 defeat at the Frost Bank Center. He went 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, in 23 minutes off the bench.
The ninth pick was matched up with Victor Wembanyama, while also switching onto other players throughout the contest. He displayed his ability to guard multiple positions, and he also scored in various ways, highlighted by his efficient showing from beyond the arc.
“(A) very impressive effort,” Raptors coach Darko Rajaković said. “He was not just guarding Wembanyama; he was guarding multiple players. He did a really good job of creating a couple of deflections and steals. Offensively, he was finding a flow in the game. I’m really happy for him and proud for him. (I’m) glad that he had such an impact on the game today.”
Murray-Boyles missed the first two games of the season because of a right forearm muscle strain. He debuted with the Raptors on Sunday, hauling in two rebounds in 13 minutes of work in a 139-129 loss on the road to the Dallas Mavericks.
The 20-year-old wasn’t much of a long-distance shooter in two years at South Carolina, but the lefty has worked extensively on that element of his game since the predraft process. The result is that Murray-Boyles has the green light to let it fly.
“If I’m open, shoot it,” Murray-Boyles said. “That is pretty much all it is. If I’m open, shoot the ball. We have been working on it since I got drafted, so (I’m) trying to be as confident as possible. Even if they’re not going in, just keep shooting them regardless. We have got a long season ahead.”
Murray-Boyles averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 44.4% shooting from the field in three preseason appearances. He registered his most productive outing on Oct. 8 with 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots.
Healthy and cleared to play, the 6-foot-7 forward is looking to build on his performance against the Spurs. He is ready to put his scoreless debut behind him and help the Raptors get back on track.
“I’m just trying to get back to what I do, how I can be effective for the team, my role on the team and how I can do that to the best of my ability,” Murray-Boyles said. “I think that was my goal today. I think that I did that pretty well.”
