WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers knocked off the Washington Wizards in overtime on Tuesday to improve to 4-0 on the season. They did it while still working Joel Embiid into the lineup as they look to play at a much faster pace and the minutes restriction placed upon him as he works his way back from major knee surgery.
Embiid played 23 minutes against the Wizards and had 25 points on 9-for-17 shooting with seven rebounds and five assists. He was taken out early in the fourth when he reached 23 minutes–the most he’s played on the season–as Adem Bona finished off the contest at the center spot.
One has to wonder when the minutes restriction will be lifted for the 2023 MVP winner.
“I don’t know,” Embiid said. “I hope soon. I mean, you get in situations like this, and like, obviously, we make the run to start the fourth. I feel like we kind of get it going and you wish the minute limit—it’s extremely annoying, but as long as we win, I’m happy. When we lose and I feel like I could have done something, then I might feel some type of way. We’re winning. So, I don’t really care.”
It was something of a mixed bag for Embiid as he had some solid numbers, but the offense was bit clunky at times with the big fella out there. The focus is so much on playing fast with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Quentin Grimes doing what they do on the perimeter and that is a big adjustment for Embiid.
The ball moves much more often in Philadelphia than it had before as coach Nick Nurse and his staff are implementing a new system. This is a style Embiid wants to grow, so while his numbers can be a bit up and down, he’s happy with what he sees.
“Our offense just needs everybody,” he said. “It’s all about making the extra play, and whoever is open, shoot the ball, play with each other. Everybody touching the ball. So it doesn’t really matter. I don’t think there’s necessarily anybody to feature. It’s just the way our offense is. We just make plays for each other. You’re open, take the shot. If not, make the extra pass, and then keep going.”
The Sixers will play host to the Boston Celtics on Friday in the NBA Cup looking for a 5-0 start to the season.
