After winning 12 games in two seasons under former Louisville star Kenny Payne, Kelsey revamped the roster and won 27 games and reached the program’s first NCAA tournament since 2019. Freshman Mikel Brown Jr. arrives to run the point, with transfers Ryan Conwell (Xavier), Isaac McKneely (Virginia) joining Aly Khalifa, returning from an injury, and J’Vonne Hadley in the lineup. Kasean Pryor is back after playing only seven games before a season-ending injury, with sophomore Khani Rooths and senior Kobe Rodgers providing depth.
South Carolina State won its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season title since 2003, finishing 20-13, and sophomore point guard Jayden Johnson is the preseason MEAC Player of the Year. Guards Florian Tenebay and Colin McKenzie also return, joined by transfer forward Cameron Clark (Cal State Bakersfield), JUCO transfers Chris Parker, Rayniel Wright, Tim Okojie, and Owen Bronston, and freshmen Teon Teal, Derwin Hodge Jr., and Noah Treadwell.
Louisville split two exhibition contests, losing 90-82 to Kansas on Oct. 24 before a 99-76 win over Bucknell on Tuesday. South Carolina State won its lone exhibition 92-53 over Allen University on Friday night. Monday’s game marks the first meeting between the programs.
