Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo had an interesting thought on Wednesday that he decided to share with the world: Could he join Marquette’s basketball team?

Random thoughts as I sit in my living room…do I have college eligibility??? Can I suit up for Marquette tonight? 🤔💭

Antetokounmpo was the No. 15 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft straight out of Greece, meaning in theory he still has college eligibility. It, of course, seems silly to imagine the two-time NBA MVP suiting up for a college basketball team, but the NCAA has been allowing overseas players to become eligible.

Marquette was quick to entertain Giannis’ idea, cooking up an image of the NBA star in a Golden Eagles jersey with the caption, “You’re welcome any time!”

Following Marquette’s 100-82 victory over Southern on Wednesday, Marquette head coach Shaka Smart was asked what he thought of the idea. He took the idea seriously, at least for a moment.

“First of all, I appreciate Giannis even thinking about Marquette,” Smart said. “Second of all, if there was ever a time for our compliance folks to go to work, now’s the time.”

Smart even started thinking about basketball strategy if Giannis were to join his squad.

“I allowed myself five minutes of suspending reality and just thinking about what it would be like if Giannis was on our team,” Smart said. “So, I’m just thinking, ‘OK, how do we play him? Who do we want out there with him?’ One of our coaches said, ‘I think we’d win every game if Giannis played.’ I don’t disagree with that.”

Former Marquette star Dwyane Wade even offered his services with his own remaining college eligibility. That is, as long as the team agreed to avoid playing man-to-man defense.

Smart reminded everyone that some former pros have earned NCAA eligibility recently, including former G League player London Johnson, who committed to Louisville this fall.

“It’s not too much of a deviation from that for Giannis to play for us,” Smart said. “So, if he ever really wanted to, we’ll find him a spot and we’ll go to work on that waiver.”
