The Boston Celtics had their second game of NBA Cup group play on Friday, going on the road to take on the Orlando Magic. With both teams part of Group B in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics came into the game with the only win in group play thus far, but ran into a very tough Magic team that would be led by their two young superstars while Boston’s supporting cast struggled to get going.

A late fourth quarter run would propel Orlando to their first win over the Celtics this season, and Jaylen Brown’s 32 points would not be enough to carry the team to another victory this season. Orlando had seven players score in double digits in the win, but Orlando’s defense and offensive aggression were too much for the Celtics to overcome.

Here’s a quick recap of the Magic’s win over the Celtics in NBA Cup Group Play:

Final score: Orlando Magic 123, Boston Celtics 110Keys to the game:

Foul trouble and free throws: Coming up at the worst possible time, the Celtics got into early foul trouble at the beginning of the fourth quarter and it would be their demise in the end. Boston would commit 27 total fouls in the game, while Orlando went to the free throw line 31 times, making 24 of their attempts. In comparison, the Celtics only attempted 16 free throws in the game.

Orlando’s offensive efficiency: Although Boston would convert on more field goals than Orlando, the Magic shot 50% from the field for the game. It’s self-explanatory that normally any team who makes at least half of their attempts, puts themselves in favorable position to win the game. Orlando attacked the paint early and often in this game, and it would be a big difference maker in this game.

Not enough balance: The Celtics play best when they’ve got everyone involved from start to finish, with contributions on both ends of the court. For most of the game, Payton Pritchard and Jaylen Brown carried the way, combining for 59 of the team’s 110 total points. Although five players would score in double figures, the offense ran through just the two aforementioned stars, and that will not be enough to lead them to victories all season.

Highlight of the game: Anthony Black hammers the big dunk and gets the foulWhat’s next: @ Orlando Magic, Sunday, November 9, 6:00PM ET

Boston will stay in Orlando and rematch against the Magic on Sunday, looking to right their wrongs from Friday night’s loss. They’ll hope to get more contributions from their supporting cast, including center Neemias Queta who finished Friday’s game with just 5 points and 8 rebounds on the night. The Celtics are a much better team when they have balance throughout the box score, and with Orlando having their number over the past two seasons, Boston will need to figure out this matchup sooner rather than later.
