The Atlanta Hawks (7-5) visit the Utah Jazz (4-7) tonight at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
The Hawks have been surprisingly resilient without Trae Young, who has been out since late October with a knee injury. Atlanta has gone 6-2 in his absence, driven largely by defense. They’ve held opponents to just 106.3 points per game over their last eight contests and haven’t allowed more than 102 points in any of their last four.
With Young sidelined, the scoring load has been shared. The Hawks have had three different leading scorers in their past three games — Mouhamed Gueye, Vit Krejci, and Jalen Johnson. Johnson leads the team for the season at 20.5 PPG and is one of eight Hawks averaging double figures, giving Atlanta one of the league’s deeper scoring rotations across both the frontcourt and backcourt.
Utah enters on the heels of a massive offensive eruption, dropping 152 points on a short-handed Indiana Pacers team. But while the offense can flash, the Jazz continue to struggle defensively, allowing 120.8 points per game and posting the sixth-worst defensive rating in the NBA.
Lauri Markkanen leads them with 28.3 PPG, followed by Keyonte George at 21.5. The loss of Walker Kessler for the season is a major blow, though rookie Ace Bailey has shown promise. He scored 20 points in the win over Indiana and has reached double figures in three straight games with improving efficiency.
Prediction
Despite playing the second half of a back-to-back on the road, Atlanta’s balance and defensive discipline give them the advantage. Utah’s offensive ceiling is high, but their defensive inconsistency remains a major concern.
Prediction: Hawks 118, Jazz 109
