Former Hornets star returning to Charlotte for Black Health Matters Summit

  • November 14, 2025

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Former Charlotte Hornets star and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member Alonzo Mourning is returning to the Queen City for a special event this weekend.

Mourning will be participating in the Black Health Matters Fall 2025 Health Summit & Expo on Saturday, Nov 15. The event is being held at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church on Beatties Ford Road.

The event is designed to empower people about health and wellness.

Mourning, who played for the Hornets from 1992 until 1995, is going to be participating in the event and speaking to people about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. He was diagnosed with a form of kidney disease in the early 2000s and even underwent a kidney transplant. Additionally, the basketball star has also battled prostate cancer.

He told WBTV he wants to encourage people to pay attention to their health and wellness.

“We have to change the narrative and the only way we do that is educate,” Mourning said in a recent interview. “Educate, educate, educate and encourage and motivate — all those things. So I’m excited about being a part of this movement.”

Charlotte has grown and developed a lot since Mourning played for the Hornets. He noted that he is excited about being back in the city where he started his career.

“I remember back in the day after 9:30, 10 o’clock, downtown was like tumbleweed,” he said jokingly. “Everything was shut down and now downtown is vibrant and it’s the place to be.”

The Black Health Matters Summit is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone interested in participating in the event can register here.
