INDIANAPOLIS — Forward Cody Martin’s 10-day hardship exception contract expired Saturday and the Pacers don’t qualify for another hardship to sign him to a second, a league source confirmed to IndyStar.

Martin averaged 13.8 minutes per game in four games with the Pacers and scored a total of seven points on 2 of 10 shooting including 0 of 5 from 3-point range, but he also grabbed 14 rebounds and gave the Pacers a physical, multi-positional wing defender.

Teams are allowed to sign players to 10-day hardship exception contracts that put them above the roster limit of 15 standard contracts and three two-way contracts if they have at least four players who have missed three consecutive games with injuries who are also expected to miss at least two more weeks with their injuries. They can sign two if they have five players who fit that description, three if they have six, etc.

The Pacers were hit hard enough by injuries to sign both Martin and forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to 10-day hardship contracts. They still qualified for an exception to sign Robinson-Earl to a second 10-day deal when his first expired Tuesday so he still has five days left on his deal.

The fact that the Pacers don’t qualify for another exception to re-sign Martin suggests that they have players on the mend. They still have seven players listed as out for Saturday’s game against the Raptors. All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton is out for the season with a torn right Achilles tendon, forward Obi Toppin is out until at least Feb. 1 with a stress fracture in his right foot and guard Kam Jones was still considered “a ways out” according to coach Rick Carlisle when asked for a status update Nov. 9. Forward Aaron Nesmith is out with a left knee sprain suffered in Thursday’s loss to Phoenix, but he hasn’t yet sat out the three games necessary to qualify for the hardship.

Guard Bennedict Mathurin (great toe sprain), forward Johnny Fuprhy (left ankle sprain) and two-way contract guard Quenton Jackson (hamstring strain) have all missed more than three games, but Carlisle hasn’t provided specific timelines for their return so this may suggest they are close to returns. Also, point guards Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell returned to the lineup after Nembhard missed seven games with a strained left shoulder and McConnell missed 10 with a hamstring strain.
