The Orlando Magic (7-6) visit the Houston Rockets (8-3) tonight for a critical Sunday night test for Franz Wagner & Co. at the Toyota Center in Houston.
The Magic seem to have found their groove, riding a three-game win streak, including key victories over the New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers. But they will be without star forward Paolo Banchero (groin) for the second straight game. They were able to beat the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night without him — but the Rockets present a far tougher challenge.
Desmond Bane, the Magic’s marquee offseason addition, is finally settling in. He’s scored at least 19 points in three of his last four games and has rediscovered his shooting stroke, hitting 36% from deep over that stretch — much closer to his career mark just above 40%.
Houston enters red-hot, winners of three straight and four of its last five. The Rockets’ offense is exploding: they dropped 140 on Portland Friday, two days after putting up 135 on Washington. They now lead the NBA in scoring at 125.5 points per game.
Their frontcourt duo of Kevin Durant (25.1 PPG) and Alperen Sengun (22.4 PPG) is one of the league’s most productive, with Sengun also averaging 10.2 rebounds and 7.4 assists. Third-year guard Amen Thompson has elevated his play as well, contributing 17.7 points per game.
Prediction
Without Banchero, the Magic lack the size and firepower needed to keep pace with the league’s top offense.
Prediction: Rockets 123, Magic 111
