Paul George could make his season debut on Monday night against the Clippers. The 76ers might well need him.
George was listed as questionable for the first time in the 76ers’ Sunday injury report ahead of Monday’s visit from George’s former team. With Kelly Oubre out with a left knee ligament sprain, George’s presence would be a salve for a truncated rotation.
George has been practicing fully since mid-October. Last week, the club said he was going through “the final stage of his return to play plan” by strengthening the quadriceps in the left leg that had arthroscopic surgery in July.
George, signed as a free agent from the Clippers in the summer of 2024, played only 41 games in 2024-25.
Oubre was diagnosed with a LCL strain in his left knee. He will miss at least Monday’s game. He exited after 15 minutes in Friday’s loss to Detroit.
He’s averaging 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 rebounds while shooting 49.7 percent from the field.
“We’ve got to get a little more eval here, so hopefully it won’t be too serious,” head coach Nick Nurse said Sunday after a practice. “But he’s having a career year. He’s doing a lot of little things that don’t show up in the numbers, as well. We’ve got to take a strong look at who’s plugging into all those areas. He loves to play, loves to be out there. He’s super disappointed, obviously. He’s playing great, so hopefully it’s not too long.”
Joel Embiid remains out with what is being termed injury management in his right knee – that is, not the surgically repaired left knee that has been the issue for much of the last two years. Adem Bona is out with a right ankle sprain that will cost him at least the next three games.
Both Jared McCain and Johni Broome were recalled from Delaware. McCain got 41 minutes across two appearances, scoring 25 points on 9-for-24 shooting. He was 1-for-9 from 3-point range.
He has played three games for the 76ers without scoring this season, shooting 0-for-9 from the field in 31 minutes. He’s still recovering from a meniscus tear last December and a thumb ligament tear in September.
“I think it was good for him to get up and down a little bit,” Nurse said. “He played two games of two stints of 10 minutes both times. … We plan on using him.”
