Terms & Conditions Hawks have won five straight games
Atlanta (9-5 SU, 8-6 ATS, and 7-7 O/U) beat Phoenix 124-122 on Sunday night, covering the spread as 1.5-point underdogs. With G Trae Young (17.8 PPG) sidelined several more weeks with a knee injury, the Hawks are paced by F Jalen Johnson, who averages 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 6.3 dimes per game. They score 117.6 points per game (18th) on 48.6 percent shooting (9th), and hold their opponents to 114.0 points per game (8th) on 45.3 percent shooting (7th).
The Hawks were 40-42 last season, finishing 8th in the Eastern Conference. They were bounced from the playoffs in the Play-In Tournament, suffering consecutive losses to the seventh-seed Magic and tenth-seed Heat. It was their fourth-straight appearance in the tourney. Atlanta was busy this offseason revamping its roster. Kobe Bufkin (trade), Clint Capela (trade), and Caris LeVert (free agent) were among the seven departures, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker (sign-and-trade), Luke Kennard (free agent), and Kristaps Porziņģis (trade) the most notable additions.
The group of newcomers joins a young, budding Hawks lineup featuring Most Improved Player Dyson Daniels and last season’s Rookie of the Year runner-up Zaccharie Risacher. With Johnson and Young leading the way, there’s clearly plenty of talent on this year’s roster, but what will it take for the Hawks to escape the Play-In Tournament? The addition of former Timberwolves guard Alexander-Walker will boost the team’s perimeter defense, leading to more transition buckets off turnovers. He and Daniels will form a terrific backcourt tandem, as Daniels is an elite on-ball defender and Alexander-Walker is a pest on screens. The frontcourt should also be formidable with Porziņģis and Onyeka Okongwu patrolling the paint.
Atlanta Hawks Basketball Injury Report: Porziņģis (knee) is day-to-day.
Pistons are on a five-game road trip
Detroit (11-2 SU, 9-4 ATS, and 6-7 O/U) beat Philadelphia 114-105 on Friday, covering as one-point spread favorites. The Pistons are led by G Cade Cunningham, who averages 27.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 9.9 assists per game. They score 118.2 points per game (17th) on 47.2 percent shooting (14th), and hold their opponents to 112.2 points per game (4th) on 43.8 percent shooting (3rd).
The Pistons went 44-38 last season, finishing sixth in the East. They lost in seven games in the first round of the playoffs to New York, but it was a tremendous turnaround campaign, as they went from the worst team in the league to clinching a playoff spot. With Cunningham fresh off his first All-Star nomination and a well-structured core around him, the Pistons are a team no one wants to play in the postseason.
Detroit didn’t make any major splashes in free agency during the offseason, but the signing of forward Duncan Robinson was impactful. The veteran sharpshooter has filled in nicely for Malik Beasley, hitting 43.3 percent of treys in his first season in The D. He and fellow Michigan alum Caris LeVert (9.6 PPG and 3.0 APG) have solidified the Pistons’ backcourt. While young and less experienced than some of the East’s top teams, Detroit is brimming with upside. Don’t count them out this season.
Detroit Pistons Basketball Injury Report: Cunningham (hip), PF Tobias Harris (ankle), C Jalen Duren (ankle), and SF Ausar Thompson (ankle) are day-to-day.
Pistons vs. Hawks Pick and PreviewSpread Pick for Pistons vs. Hawks
Atlanta is hot, but Detroit (winners of nine straight before Monday’s game) is scalding. The momentum will fuel them to a win and cover on the road in the second game of a back-to-back, as they attack the home team at the rim (1st in rim FG attempts), where they rank 15th in opponent shooting percentage (64.4%). On the other end of the court, Atlanta is an average three-point shooting team and doesn’t generate enough second-chance scoring opportunities (24th in offensive rebounding percentage). The Hawks also struggle to box out on defense (29th in opponent offensive rebounding percentage).
Bet on the Pistons to cover the spread on Tuesday night!
Over/Under Pick for Pistons vs. Hawks
These teams will play at a faster pace on Tuesday. The home team ranks 10th in pace, averaging the sixth-shortest offensive possession length, while Detroit is 14th, averaging the sixth-shortest defensive possession length. The visitors also attempt the seventh-most field goals (91.4 per game) in the NBA. In other words, Atlanta and Detroit will put up a lot of shots tomorrow night. While less efficient from beyond the arc, the Hawks rank 9th in two-point percentage (56.6%). The Pistons will keep up by attacking the home team inside and at the foul line (9th-highest free-throw attempt rate).
The over is 8-1-1 in the last ten matchups between Detroit and Atlanta. Bet on that trend continuing on Tuesday!
