INDIANAPOLIS — The Pacers plan to sign sharp-shooting wing Garrison Mathews to a 10-day hardship contract after converting forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl’s contract to a standard, non-guaranteed deal and waiving point guard Monte Morris, a league source confirmed to the IndyStar on Thursday. Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype had the story first.
The 29-year-old Mathews has played in 314 games and started 64 over six NBA seasons with the Wizards, Rockets and Hawks, averaging 6.5 points per game over the course of his career with a high-water mark of 10.0 per game with the Rockets in the 2021-22 season. The 6-5, 215-pounder has relied almost entirely on 3-point shooting for offense with 1,221 of his 1,438 career field goal attempts (84.9%) coming from beyond the 3-point arc. He’s made 467 of those attempts, making him a career 38.2% 3-point shooter. He made 44% of his 3s with the Hawks in 2023-24, knocking down 85 of 193 attempts. Last season with the Hawks, he made 85 of 218 attempts (39.0%).
The Pacers are in desperate need of outside shooting with four of their top six 3-point shooters in terms of volume and five of their top seven in terms of percentage from last season either injured or lost to free agency. The Pacers are last in 3-point field goal percentage in the NBA, making just 30.7% of their attempts from beyond the arc.
Teams are allowed to sign players to hardship exception contracts if they have at least four players who have missed three consecutive games and who are expected to miss at least two more weeks. The Pacers had six players listed as “out” for Wednesday’s game against the Hornets — All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, forwards Obi Toppin, Aaron Nesmith and Johnny Furphy and guards Kam Jones and Quenton Jackson. Haliburton is out for the season, Toppin is out until at least Feb. 1. Nesmith, who missed his third consecutive game Wednesday, is out approximately four weeks. The Pacers haven’t given timelines on Jones, Jackson or Furphy but Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Jones is still “aways out” with a lower back stress reaction.
Mathews is the third player the Pacers have signed to a 10-day hardship contract this season, joining Robinson-Earl and forward Cody Martin. They have also signed and waived two guards since the season started in Monte Morris and Mac McClung as they’ve spent the season scrambling for depth.
