The University of Rhode Island women’s basketball team upset #16 North Carolina State on Sunday. 

The now 6-1 Rams beat the Wolfpack (3-3) on the road 68-63. URI forced 16 turnovers and limited NC State (3-3) to 7-for-19 from the perimeter.

The Rams led 33-30 at the half, before the Wolfpack outscored URI in the third quarter, tying the game up at 51.

NC State then went up 56-51 in the 4th quarter. 

 

How URI Won

Following a URI timeout, Vanessa Harris hit a layup with an assist from Brooklyn Gray. Harris then came up with a steal that led to a Gray jumper, getting the Rams back within one, 56-55. 

An Ines Debroise basket put URI up 57-56 just under the six-minute mark, and an offensive rebound by Valentina Ojeda allowed Palmire Mbu to score a second-chance basket, capping an 8-0 run to give the Rams a three-point lead with 4:08 remaining. 

After an NC State timeout, the Wolfpack managed a three-point play to tie the score. After the teams traded empty possessions, NC State then hit a 3-pointer to take a 62-59 lead with 2:36 remaining. 

Harris then hit two free throws for URI to make it a one-point game again. NC State then made 1-of-2 at the line before Harris sank a 3-pointer to pull Rhode Island in front, 64-63 with 1:56 to go.

The defense came up with a stop on the next possession, and Mbu hit a layup to extend the lead to 66-63 with 53 seconds to go.

Debroise came up with a steal, but then NC State got a steal of their own with 16 seconds remaining. Out of a timeout, Debroise knocked the ball out of bounds off an NC State player, giving URI the ball with 11 seconds to go.

Debroise was theb fouled and sank a pair of free throws with six seconds to go, sealing the win.
