The Detroit Pistons (14-2) visit the Indiana Pacers (2-14) tonight at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in a matchup between two teams moving in opposite directions — literally.
Detroit enters on a 12-game winning streak and continues to look like one of the league’s most complete teams.
The Pistons are coming off a 129–116 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, who were without Giannis Antetokounmpo. Cade Cunningham put up another near-triple-double (29 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds) — comparable to what he’s been doing all season.
His leap has been central to Detroit’s rise, but the story of their season is depth: seven Pistons are averaging double-figures, and their second-ranked defense (110.0 defensive rating) has been overwhelming opponents.
These teams met just last Monday, when Detroit — missing multiple rotation pieces — still won 127–112 behind a strong night from Jalen Duren (31 points). The Pistons’ physicality and balance have been too much for most teams, and Indiana hasn’t shown signs of being the exception.
The Pacers continue to spiral, with injuries gutting both their rotation and identity. They’re allowing more than 120 points per game and shooting just 41% from the field — numbers that the offense just can’t compete with in the absence of Tyrese Haliburton.
Pascal Siakam (24.8 PPG) has carried their offense all season long, and the return of Andrew Nembhard (19.0 PPG) and Bennedict Mathurin (26.4 PPG) gives hope that they can escape the Eastern Conference basement. But their supporting cast has been depleted, and the defensive end has collapsed without their top players available.
Prediction
Detroit’s depth, defensive consistency, and ability to dictate tempo should allow them to control this one from start to finish. Indiana’s scoring trio can keep it interesting in stretches, but the Pacers aren’t equipped to sustain stops against one of the NBA’s hottest teams.
Prediction: Pistons 118, Pacers 104
