Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard called out college football analyst Tom Loy for calling him a “major bust” in 2012.

On Friday, Lillard shared a photo of Loy’s tweet from 2012 wherein the analyst shared his assessment of the 6-foot-2 guard. Portland selected Lillard as the No. 6 pick of the 2012 NBA draft. Lillard tagged Loy in the tweet and said:

Thanks for the submission!

“A memory popped up.”

In the screenshot, Loy said:

“I think Lillard will be a major bust… just my opinion. Shoots too low, isn’t explosive and nothing about his game screams elite.”

Many fans found Lillard calling out and tagging Loy hilarious.

“(Michael) Jordan level of petty 😭,” one fan tweeted.

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 Jordan level of petty 😭

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 I love that you tagged him. 😂😂

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 Memory long range too 🎯🔥

Other fans criticized Loy’s tweet, saying that Lillard had an outstanding collegiate career with Weber State. In his final season with the Wildcats in 2011-12, he averaged 24.5 points per game on 46.7% shooting, including 40.9% from 3-point range.

Lillard finished his collegiate career as the No. 2 scorer in Weber State’s history. However, he was eventually surpassed by Jerrick Harding and Jeremy Senglin.

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 The only thing he got right in that tweet is that you weren’t explosive. The rest is nothing but hate. “shoots too low” lmaooo 😂😂 Senior year stat line : 24 PPG, 47% FG (on 15 shots), 40% from 3 (7 3PA), 89% FT… completely absurd. It makes zero sense to call you a bust 💀

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 Cooked that fraud 😭

However, one fan questioned Lillard’s lack of an NBA championship and league MVP award in 13 seasons.

@Dame_Lillard @TomLoy247 I mean is he wrong tho? No MVP or a Ring

Other fans argued that while Damian Lillard has not won a ring, his accolades are worthy of consideration for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Trail Blazers star is a nine-time All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA selection. Lillard is also a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Damian Lillard is optimistic about the Trail Blazers’ season

Aside from several injuries to key players, the Portland Trail Blazers have been hounded by an off-court issue. Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was placed on immediate leave due to an FBI-led gambling investigation.

Damian Lillard told The Athletic’s Jason Quick that he is confident about the Trail Blazers’ chances in a competitive Western Conference.

“I told these dudes: this is the time when you find your true identity,” Lillard said on Nov. 21. “It’s not when you win a couple games and everything feels good. It’s in the moments when it would be easy to walk away — like now, we have some injuries, a rough patch, a tough schedule — but this is the time when you make a decision to march forward and up.”

The veteran star believes that “better days are ahead” for his team. Coming into Friday, Portland is 8-11.

The team announced in the offseason that Damian Lillard would miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season. Despite this, Trail Blazers fans have hope with the emergence of Deni Avdija and Shaedon Sharpe. The team has also gotten steady contributions from veterans Jerami Grant and Jrue Holiday.
