Luka Dončić and Anthony Edwards stand out as two of the NBA’s premier talents. They have shared the league for six seasons now and have already squared off in the playoffs twice.

After splitting those head-to-head postseason matchups at one series apiece, another clash seems entirely possible given how both teams are approaching the 2025-26 campaign. This history naturally sparks debate about which star serves as the better cornerstone for the franchise. Believe it or not, one prominent NBA figure would actually choose Edwards over the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

Who Would Take Anthony Edwards Over Luka Dončić?

On “Run it Back,” former NBA player and three-time Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams explained he would pick Edwards over Dončić.

“It’s tough, but obviously, I like both. I would say (Edwards),” Williams said, per the show’s Instagram account. “I think he has more potential. Knowing everything that we know, a little younger. The upside is there. Luka… (is) a better playmaker, can score. I just like Edwards’ energy. If I’m trying to energize a franchise, trying to energize a fanbase, I would go with (Edwards).”

For what it’s worth, the last time these two faced high stakes, Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves not only beat the Lakers but also embarrassed them in a gentleman’s sweep.

Of course, the context was different then. Los Angeles was still adapting after acquiring Luka freaking Dončić mid-season. The situation has changed significantly this year, as Dončić’s efforts have “energized” the Lakers to a 15-4 start. That record currently places them as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference bloodbath.

Edwards, meanwhile, has led Minnesota to a solid but unspectacular 12-8 start. There’s no telling if the Lakers’ dominance will continue, especially considering they did most of their damage without LeBron James, or if the Timberwolves will improve on their early record. However, a Round Three matchup in the postseason would certainly add fresh fuel to this conversation.

Dončić has played like one of the league’s best so far this year. It’s not too late for Edwards to match that level, but he has some ground to make up. Williams’ take might look bold right now, but if the Lakers experience a repeat of their last playoff meeting with Edwards and the Timberwolves, that perspective won’t seem so out of line.
