Zion Williamson has been sidelined once again due to injury. However, the New Orleans Pelicans head coach, James Borrego, decided that displaying open support for his franchise cornerstone is the best course of action.
As things stand, the Pelicans are one of the worst teams in the league. They are dead last in the West at 3-19 and have no chance of making it to the postseason unless a miraculous comeback takes place.
Having a healthy Williamson on the court would go a long way towards this potential comeback. Unfortunately, the Pelicans star has already been dealing with injuries in the early stages of the season.
Zion Williamson’s Injury History Has Been A Problem
Williamson’s frame and playstyle were already viewed as risky and injury-prone even before he entered the league.
Although the Pelicans star is a rising young talent, his injuries and limited availability are a cause for concern. While Williamson recently returned to the court, reports have revealed that he will be sidelined once again due to a grade 2 right hip adductor strain.
He is expected to miss around three weeks of action, which reduces the Pelicans’ chances of orchestrating a comeback. Despite Williamson’s lack of availability and consistency, coach Borrego defended his young star during a recent interview.
“Nobody wants to be on the floor more than Zion. This guy loves the game, loves this city, wears this logo with great pride. The bottom line is, get back to work, all of us. Everyone that is available, it’s work time. Nobody is feeling sorry for us.”

While it may be heartwarming for Pelicans fans to hear that Williamson has no intention of leaving the team, Borrego’s recent statements do not really address his current injury status or expected return to the court.
In fact, critics may view his comments as superficial or lacking authenticity. Although Williamson has yet to express a serious desire to leave the Pelicans, there is no getting around the fact that the relationship between both sides has become strained over the years.
In any case, Williamson’s expected absence will give other players on the Pelicans a chance to prove their value to the team. Hopefully, he is able to return to action soon with the hopes of saving the Pelicans’ season.
