Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has long been an advocate for education equality, and has put his money and his effort where his mind is, working with local schools and universities to start programs with his foundation to to improve access to education, particularly among underserved minority children in the greater Boston area.

So it should come as no surprise to hear that the Georgia native pays close to some of the dynamics shaping educational inequality, which he spoke about in an appearance on “The Big Tigger Morning Show” on local radio station V-103 Atlanta, nearby his hometown of Marietta. “The education system in America is kind of crazy,” said Brown.

“Depending on where you go to school, what zip code you got will determine what type of education you’ll get,” he continued.

“For example, I went to school in Marietta in high school,” said the University of California – Berkeley alum. “But in middle school, I went to school in DeKalb County, in Tucker—30 minutes up the road. Two different curriculums … and that’s some of the realities here in Atlanta, but also some of the realities here in America.”

Since breaking onto the NCAA and then the NBA scene as a star player, Brown has worked to use his platform and resources to open doors to those zip codes that do not reach the same heights in terms of educational infrastructure and attention. And based on the experiences he has had, it makes all the sense in the world why he has done so.
