The start of a new week means another dive into the toughest corner of Division I basketball.

A New Week, Another Hard Look at College Basketball’s Struggling Teams

There were a few shifts and minor movements from last week, but most of the regular residents of the cellar held firm. The bottom feeders remain right where they have been.

365. Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (1–8)

Mississippi Valley State now holds the final spot after dropping seven straight games. Recent results include a 36 point loss at Texas A&M and a 14 point defeat in Monroe. They are scoring 69.1 points per game while giving up more than 88. Next up is a trip to Manhattan, Kansas to face Kansas State.

364. Chicago State Cougars (1–9)

Chicago State did win a game, but it came against a non Division I opponent, which was not enough to keep them from falling a spot. A planned matchup with South Carolina State was canceled due to winter weather, and the Cougars followed their lone win with a blowout loss at Illinois State. They remain in Chicago to face a struggling Loyola team before meeting Bowling Green and Indiana.

363. Gardner Webb Bulldogs (0–11)

The misery continues for Gardner Webb as they became the first team in the nation to reach 10, then 11 losses. They surrendered 88 points in a loss to Georgia Southern. A matchup with Brevard offers a rare chance to grab a win before returning to tougher Division I competition.

362. South Carolina State Bulldogs (0–9)

Another set of Bulldogs finds itself near the bottom. South Carolina State has dropped its last three games by double digits and has rarely been competitive this year. They remain the only winless team in the MEAC. Road trips to Charleston Southern and Queens come next before a home date with USC Upstate. The Bulldogs allow 88.7 points per game.

361. Coppin State Eagles (2–10)

Coppin State carries a three game losing streak into the week. Since beating Rider on the road, they have fallen to Loyola Maryland, West Virginia and Liberty, allowing 92 points in the most recent loss. Offense remains a major issue, with just 64.4 points per game and no double digit scorer on the roster. The Eagles rank 380th in assists per game. They travel to Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday.

360. Saint Francis Red Flash (2–8)

Saint Francis did win this week, but yet again it came against a non Division I opponent. Both of their victories fit that category. After a week of practice, they visit Temple. Four NEC teams sit at two wins, and the league’s best has only five after the first month.

359. Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions (1–9)

Arkansas Pine Bluff jumped out of the basement by winning at UIC and putting up a competitive showing at DePaul. That slight progress moved them from 365 to 359. The Golden Lions now travel to Tulsa before taking on two non Division I opponents.

358. Alcorn State Braves (1–9)

Alcorn State’s lone win is still the upset at Indiana State. Since then they have taken heavy losses at Louisiana Tech and Iowa State, allowing 132 points to the Cyclones. They give up more than 90 per game and score just 66.5. A road trip to Baylor does not offer relief.

357. Morgan State Bears (1–7)

Morgan State has dropped six straight, though they have been competitive in several games, including close losses to Drexel and Longwood. Their only win came early in the season against Central Penn. They are the only MEAC team with a single win. Up next is a visit to DePaul followed by a home game with Niagara.

356. Florida A&M Rattlers (1–5)

Florida A&M finally picked up a win, though it came against a non Division I opponent in Florida Memorial. They do not play again until December 17 when they face Jacksonville. The Rattlers score just 66.3 points per game while allowing nearly 87.

In Consideration: The Citadel Bulldogs (2–7)

The Citadel has dropped four straight and remains on the radar for possible entry into the Bottom 10.

There you have it, the updated Bottom 10 rankings for men’s college basketball. Expect more movement once conference play begins, as these teams battle to climb out of the cellar. Enjoy the season!
