CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers fell to the Portland Trail Blazers, 112-110, Dec. 3 at Rocket Arena.

The Cavs (13-10), led by Donovan Mitchell in the midst of a career year, were coming off of a road win against the Indiana Pacers and were looking to make it two consecutive wins after dropping three in a row.

Evan Mobley hit a 3 with 2:34 left to cut it to a five-point deficit, but the Cavs offense ran cold from there, and Cleveland fell to Portland, 122-110.

The Blazers shot 41 percent from 3-point range, while the Cavs shot just 25 percent. Portland also won the rebounding battle 54-45, which is becoming a recurring problem for the Cavs.

A Donovan Mitchell spin move has made it 111-103 with 3:59 left, as the Cavs have chipped away at Portland’s lead in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell drove the lane, spun around a defender and hit a floater to cut the lead to eight. He’s up to 31 points and four assists. The Cavs are winning the rebounding battle in the fourth quarter 11-7, which has been the biggest reversal in the game.

Thomas Bryant led the Cavs back to a single-digit deficit, though the Trail Blazers pushed it back up to a 14-point lead, 99-85, entering the fourth quarter.

Bryant rejected Duop Reath at the rim on an attempted two-handed dunk. On the offensive end, he buried back-to-back 3s to temporarily reduce the deficit to nine points before Portland went on a run to end the quarter.

This has been arguably Cleveland’s worst defensive performance of the season against the type of team that has given them trouble all season.

The Trail Blazers were identified as a team that might give the Cavs trouble due to their athleticism, transition offense and offensive rebounding. So far, all of the Cavs’ nightmares of come true, as Portland now leads 84-66 midway through the third quarter.

Portland is shooting 46 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3-point range while winning the rebounding battle 36-26. They’re on pace to score more than 30 points in all three quarters thus far.

The Cavaliers defense has yet to check in tonight, and the Trail Blazers will take a 68-58 lead into halftime.

Portland has been crushing the Cavs on the boards with nine offensive rebounds. Deni Avdija is up to a team-high 17 points. Caleb Love and Shaedon Sharpe have 12 and 10 points off the bench, respectively.

Donovan Mitchell is up to 19 points and four assists, and Evan Mobley has 16 points, three bounds and two assists, but they haven’t been able to keep up with the Trail Blazers offense on their own. Combined, the Cavs bench is 3-for-13 from the floor tonight.

The Cavs and Trail Blazers aren’t exactly putting on a defensive show tonight, and Cleveland has a 43-42 lead midway through the second quarter.

Evan Mobley (16 points) and Donovan Mitchell (14) have combined for 30 points. Jaylon Tyson also threw down a thunderous dunk in transition.

The Trail Blazers, while pushing the tempo in transition whenever possible, have 42 points but not a single scorer in double digits yet.

Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley are almost scoring at will, but so are the Trail Blazers, and Portland has a 36-33 lead after the first quarter.

Portland’s scoring has seemingly come from very angle, too, as the Trail Blazers have six players with either five or six points. The Cavs’ scoring has been much more funneled through Mitchell and Mobley, who have combined for 26 points so far.

The Trail Blazers fit the mold of a team that has given the Cavs fits this season, and that was the case defensively again.

Donovan Mitchell is tearing through the Trail Blazers and already has 14 points with three minutes remaining in the quarter and the Cavs holding a 31-25 lead. Mitchell is 6-for-8 from the floor with two assists.

The Cavaliers offense has come out firing on all cylinders, and Cleveland has a 15-7 lead three minutes into the game.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson noted before the game that if Portland wants to go small and fast, Evan Mobley would need to punish them for it. In three minutes of play, he has eight points on 3-for-3 shooting from the floor. Donovan Mitchell has five points and two assists.

Below is some pregame information.

The Cavs will be without center Jarrett Allen (finger), guard Sam Merrill (hand), forward Larry Nance Jr. (calf strain) and small forward Max Strus (foot surgery).

Guard Lonzo Ball, who was questionable with an illness, is available.
