Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has been showing that he can handle a bigger workload this season than what he was asked to do during his time with the Denver Nuggets. Porter has spoken about his growth as a leader within Brooklyn’s locker room, but it’s the improvement in his game that everyone has been taking notice of, including the league itself.

The NBA announced Monday on X that Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown and Nuggets guard Jamal Murray had been named the Players of the Week for their respective conferences, but it was the additional post that was notable. The NBA also mentioned that Porter was one of the other nominees for the honor, indicating that this past week was a great one not only for the Nets, but for Porter as well.

From Dec. 1 to Dec. 7, Porter averaged 34.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 55.2% from the field and 51.5% from behind the three-point line, all while leading Brooklyn to a 3-0 record when he was available. Those wins were over the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, and New Orleans Pelicans and Porter scored at least 33 points in each of those victories.

Porter, 27, is having by far the best season of his career as he’s averaging 25.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 49.6% from the field and 39.2% from three-point land. Aside from his shooting percentages, Porter is on pace to achieve career-highs in almost every statistical category while still being relatively close to his career efficiency marks.

With guard Cam Thomas having played in just eight of Brooklyn’s 23 games this season, Porter has been asked to do more in Thomas’ absence and he has met that challenge and then some. With the Nets expected to be one of the worst teams in the league by the time this season is over, Porter may not have the chance to win Player of the Week anytime soon, but if he continues playing this way, he could win the award during a random winning streak.

Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. received votes for Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 34.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 55.2% from the field and 51.5% from 3. Brooklyn was 3-0 from Dec. 1-7 as well. https://t.co/8p2lOOZCGH
