Victor Wembanyama missed the San Antonio Spurs’ NBA Cup action against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.
As the Spurs advance to the next phase of the tournament, the team’s head coach, Mitch Johnson, dropped a major update on the star center following Wednesday’s game.
When asked if Wembanyama could be available on Saturday, the head coach told reporters, “Very much so.”
“He had a very intense day this morning and we’ll have to see how he responds and reacts tomorrow.”
How Long Has Victor Wembanyama Been Out?
The Spurs’ superstar suffered a left calf strain in November. He underwent an MRI, and was expected to miss several weeks of action after landing his diagnosis.
The last time Wembanyama played with the Spurs was during their November 14 matchup against the Golden State Warriors. At the time, Wembanyama checked in for 38 minutes. He scored 26 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, while blocking three shots on the defensive end.
When the Spurs hosted the Sacramento Kings two nights later, Wembanyama missed his first game of the season. He hasn’t played since then, resulting in a 12-game stretch of absences.
The Spurs Advance in the NBA Cup
Without Wembanyama, the Spurs managed to take down the thriving Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday with a 132-119 win. The Spurs landed a combined 50-point effort from Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox.
Now, the Spurs are set to take on the dominant Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night. The Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns just hours before the Spurs and the Lakers tipped off their quarter-final action. So far, the Thunder have only been defeated once this year.
The Spurs hope to get the dominant Wembanyama back in time for the win-or-go-home matchup.
This year, Wembanyama has 12 appearances. During that stretch, he has produced 26.2 points, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep. Along with his scoring, he has posted averages of 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.6 blocks.
