The G League’s OKC Blue were on the wrong side of a close 103-101 loss to the Birmingham Squadron on Thursday. The home defeat dropped its record to 4-9 on the season.

The Blue and Squadron kept it close through the first half. Neither led by more than a couple of possessions. Both were tied at 20 points apiece after the first quarter. OKC scored 33 points in the second frame to create a small advantage. It entered the halftime break with a 53-50 lead.

That remained the story after the break. The Blue put up 26 points in the third frame, but the Squadron tied it up at the end. We had a tied game at 79 points apiece after the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw both teams go back and forth until the final possession. Alas, OKC’s 22 points in the final frame weren’t enough.

After the Blue opened up a 97-89 lead with four minutes left, the Squadron finished on a 14-4 run to complete the comeback. A chance to hit the game-winner, Brooks Barnhizer turned it over in traffic with 15 seconds left. That allowed Trey Alexander to score the game-winning layup with 10 seconds left.

The Blue shot 39% from the field and went 17-of-45 (37.8%) from 3. They shot 9-of-15 on free throws. They had 24 assists on 34 baskets. Four Blue players scored double-digit points.

Meanwhile, the Squadron shot 44% from the field and went 9-of-36 (25%) from 3. They shot 8-of-11 on free throws. They had 25 assists on 40 baskets. Six Squadron players scored double-digit points.
