The Brooklyn Nets (6-18) had the chance to come out of their mini-break due to the NBA Cup with a win over a Dallas Mavericks team that is still missing Kyrie Irving. While Brooklyn lost in Dallas on Friday in disappointing fashion, the Nets turn their sights to facing the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday and they will be doing so without one of their rookies.
The Nets announced on Saturday that rookie guard Ben Saraf is out for Sunday’s game against the Bucks due to an illness. Heading into Friday’s game at the Mavericks, Brooklyn announced that Saraf would be out for the game as he remained on assignment with the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League afiliate, so it seems like this illness came about within the past few days.
Saraf, 19, has split his time this season between the G League and the NBA, but there was a point where he was the starting point guard within head coach Jordi Fernandez’s rotation. In six games with Long Island this season, Saraf is averaging 12.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 40.0% from the field and 36.0% from three-point land.
In Saraf’s 12 NBA appearances this campaign, he is averaging 5.4 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 35.5% from the field and 27.3% from deep. With Saraf out of the lineup due to his illness, that should mean more minutes for players like Tyrese Martin, Danny Wolf, and Nolan Traore, three players that can step in to absorb some minutes at backup point guard behind rookie Egor Demin.
Traore, who was recently recalled by Brooklyn after having some great games in the G League, played just nine minutes in Dallas as Fernandez gave more minutes to Wolf and forward Ziaire Williams. Sunday’s matchup against the Bucks should be easier for the Nets with superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo ruled out due to a calf strain so it’s possible that Traore could see more minutes coming off the bench as a result.
