The Minnesota Timberwolves are thriving this season, improving to 16–9 after a Friday night victory over the Golden State Warriors. Despite their strong start, the team remains a move or two away from being considered a top contender in the loaded Western Conference.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Timberwolves could be active in pursuit of upgrades. According to an insider, Minnesota is showing significant interest in a score-first guard from the Eastern Conference to bolster its roster and add offensive firepower.
Timberwolves Eyeing Top Eastern Conference Scoring Guard
The Timberwolves remain in need of a true point guard as they look to make a legitimate championship push. Donte DiVincenzo has handled the starting role to begin the season and has been decent, averaging 13.5 points and 3.7 assists per game. Still, the current backcourt may not generate enough offense at the highest level.
That’s why The Athletic’s Sam Amick reports that Minnesota is showing legitimate interest in Chicago Bulls guard Coby White.
“A Wolves source confirmed that there is legitimate interest in White, but the 25-year-old’s looming free agency appears to be a significant hindrance to a possible trade,” Amick wrote.
“He’s making $12.8 million in the final year of his deal and is widely expected to seek a major raise this summer. But the fear of that unknown, it seems, means this is the kind of “rental” situation that drops the price point precipitously and creates a negotiating gap between the two sides.”
White has been limited to just eight appearances this season because of injury, but his impact has been evident when available. He’s averaging 21.9 points, three rebounds, and five assists, showcasing his ability to score and facilitate.
His skill set would complement Anthony Edwards well in the backcourt, easing the offensive burden on a team that leans heavily on its frontcourt while searching for reliable perimeter production.
However, White’s contract situation complicates any potential deal. He is in the final year of his current three-year deal worth approximately $36 million, earning roughly $12.9 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026. White has made it clear he does not plan to sign an extension before the season ends, placing both Chicago and Minnesota in a difficult position.
For now, White’s future remains uncertain. At the same time, the Timberwolves must weigh whether their current roster is close enough to contention to justify making a rental trade as the trade window approaches.
